Seoul Travel

Origin of Street. Tehran name

Teheran-ro ranges from Seocho-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul to Samsung Bridge, Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu.
It is a 50m wide and 4km long road that crosses the Gangnam area from east to west.
Under Tehran Road, Subway Line 2 passes from Gangnam Station to Samsung Station.

It was in the mid-1970s that the name Teheranro was named.
At the time, Korea was trying to overcome the first oil crisis. So, we started to build close cooperative relationships with the Middle East countries, and Seoul City established a sisterhood relationship with Tehran City, Iran in June 1977.
To commemorate this, Mayor Tehran, who visited Seoul at the time, suggested exchanging road names in both cities. So, he renamed the street at that time, Samreung-ro, to Teheran-ro.

In addition, venture companies in the fields of information and communication and the Internet are concentrated. That's why it was nicknamed Tehran Valley, named after Silicon Valley in the United States, the world's home for ventures.

However, there are many problems in the case where Korea's startups are concentrated in the Tehran Valley.
It is difficult to have a Korean identity internationally and it is highly likely to be confused with Tehran, the capital of Iran. Therefore, there are many opinions that the name should be revised on the judgment that it is inappropriate.
For reference, companies such as Naver moved to Pangyo. Other IT companies also moved to Pangyo a lot.
It is still a very complicated street, with high-rise buildings such as Renaissance Hotels, Intercontinental Hotels, Trade Center, and Hyundai Department Store nearby.

Iran also has a street named after Seoul.
There is a six-lane round-trip straight road in the Banak region of northern Iran's capital Tehran. The road is named Seoulro. If you go south along this road, there is a park called Seoul Park. Seoul Park is located in other areas, but it is the only place in the Middle East.
